Join us for an experimental writing and drawing workshop with artist Christine Kirouac.

Saturday, January 19, 2019 @ 12:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. | Overlook Gallery

Kirouac, whose exhibition, The Same Leaving: 3 Projects by Christine Kirouac, opens on Thursday, January 17, will provide insights into her artistic process, and teach participants how to see, write, and draw in new ways. Participants will leave this workshop with a refreshed perspective in drawing, and a new mentality for how to approach inspiration and instinct. Participants will walk the grounds of SECCA, consider details within the landscape, snapshot, take the forms back to the indoor workshop, learn how to scrutinize and become intimate with your form through a writing exercise. The writing will involve using descriptive language, developing your form (a tree, leaf, rock, etc.) as if a character in a story, and at once revealing an understanding of your own aesthetic instincts.

Particular focus will be paid to how artists use grayscale value, and how to simplify a complex idea into its most essential elements. Kirouac will also offer insight into different approaches to making and how your mental state and emotions affect what you choose and how you interact with your surroundings.

*This workshop is for ages 16 +

*No previous drawing experience is required.

*All art supplies will be provided. Please wear walking shoes, dress for the weather, and if possible bring a camera-enabled smartphone.
