Join SECCA and The Engaging Educator in exploring the galleries through our new art-making and improv after school program.

Thursday, May 04, 2017 @ 3:30 p.m. - 5:30 p.m. | Overlook Gallery

After a successful summer program, we're meeting after school this spring from 3:30-5:30pm, focusing on a new medium and improv principle each week. Students will interpret one artwork in the gallery, create their own art using professional supplies, and spend time learning improv as we investigate SECCA's Art-o-mat exhibition. We'll explore sculpture, miniatures, painting and even create our very own Zine issue, all while experimenting with characters, setting, story, and motivation in improv!

The program is designed to be drop-in, with different focuses each week - join us for one or all four sessions! Open to students in grades 4-8. RSVPs and prepayment are encouraged, but drop-ins are welcome.

Cost: $30/class includes all materials and a snack
Dates: Thursdays, 3:30pm - 5:30pm
April 20, 27, May 4, 11

About

The Engaging Educator:

The Engaging Educator specializes in customized, improv-based education. Using improv and performance pedagogy as professional development and continuing education for non-actors, we've worked with a wide range of clients – from Fortune 500 Companies to Startups to Schools and Universities. Every program we do is created with our student's goals and personality in mind. Since 2012, we've improv(ed) companies like Google, Viacom and Saks Fifth Avenue, worked with museums like the Guggenheim and SFMOMA, collaborated with organizations like ABC of NC Child Development Center and Startup Institute and reached countless individuals through our public classes. Based in NYC, LA and Winston-Salem, NC, we've led programs in over twenty-five states, bringing our brand of 'yes, and' nationwide.

Art-o-mat:

Art-o-mat began in 1997 as a conceptual artwork by Winston-Salem artist Clark Whittington, repurposing cigarette vending machines to become dispensers for artist multiples, beginning with his own. Art-o-mat has since burgeoned into an international network of contributing artists, with collaborating host institutions that invite the public to experience art and collecting in a widely accessible and innovative way.

SECCA's Art-o-mat Exhibition:

Twenty years after its founding, SECCA is proud to present a full retrospective of Art-o-mat. This exhibition will include an armada of Art-o-mat machines and will expose their machinery, inviting all to see how an Art-o-mat is put together and customized. It will present numerous miniature art works that are dispensed from the machines and larger-scale commissioned works by the artists who produce editions for Art-o-mat, allowing them to flex their muscles and make new work.
