The RiverRun International Film Festival's RiverRun Retro Series teams with the Southeastern Center for Contemporary Arts to present their first collaborative "Controversial Classic." On Friday, June 23, the 1964 classic The Night of the Iguana, starring Smithfield, North Carolina native and Hollywood icon Ava Gardner, will be screened at SECCA.

The Night of the Iguana portrays the story of Reverend Shannon, a defrocked Episcopal clergyman gone astray, torn between his passions and his devotion, who leads a bus-load of middle-aged Baptist women on a religious-themed tour of the Mexican coast and comes to terms with past demons in re-evaluating his life.

The film, directed by John Huston and based on the 1961 play of the same name written by Tennessee Williams, also stars Richard Burton, Deborah Kerr, Sue Lyon and Grayson Hall, and won the 1964 Academy Award for Best Costume Design, as well as Oscar nominations for Best Art Direction and Best Cinematography.

The program will include a pre-screening discussion/introduction with Lynell Seabold, Executive Director of the Ava Gardner Museum in Smithfield, and Matthew McCarthy, Executive Assistant of the Ava Gardner Museum, both of whom are well-versed in Ms. Gardner's career. The film will be followed by a free reception, including beverages from Hoots Beer Co. and McRitchie Winery, as well as hors d'oeuvres provided by Mooney's Mediterranean Café.

The program will begin at 7:30 PM.

General admission is $12.50 + fees for adults.

$10 for students with a valid student ID. *Only available at the door.
