NCMA Winston-Salem Artist Call for Public Murals

NCMA Winston-Salem seeks three artists to create public murals in Winston-Salem's West End and Waughtown neighborhoods. This project is part of NCMA Winston-Salem's Community Arts Initiative. The Community Arts Initiative and public murals are funded through the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA). This project is a sponsored project of Arts Council of Winston-Salem and funded through ARPA as supported by the Forsyth County Board of Commissioners.

Project Summary
• Create two (2) murals in the West End neighborhood along Canal Dr. near the West End Mill Works and one (1) in the Waughtown neighborhood of Winston-Salem (location pending).
• Selected artists will create murals that commemorate what they love most about living in Forsyth County.
• Mural dimensions are estimated at 8-ft h x 20-ft w. Exact dimensions will be decided in consultation with the selected artists.
• Artist interviews will be conducted on a rolling basis between September 16 - October 18, 2024.
• Deadline to apply: October 13, 2024, 11:59 pm.

Budget
The total budget for this project is $30,000. This includes artist commissions, design, materials, installation, and any additional fees.

Eligibility
• This opportunity is open to individuals and teams who live or work in Forsyth County.
• Applicants must be at least 21 years of age and authorized to work in the United States.
• Applicants must have at least a three-year history of professional practice.
• Applicants must have demonstrated experience in the arts through the creation of high-quality work.

Project Overview
Launched this past February, the Community Arts Initiative is a dynamic outreach program providing greater access to the arts and arts education across Forsyth County. Through an ongoing series of artist-led experiences, we hope to foster deeper connections between NCMA Winston-Salem and the people we serve, and to discover new ways of amplifying our communities' outstanding artists.

For this project, NCMA Winston-Salem will commission up to three local artists to create murals that commemorate what they love most about living in Forsyth County. From the food and culture of our vibrant communities to the architecture and natural resources that define our landscape, our goal is to create spaces where people can gather and celebrate the spirit of Forsyth County.

Project Timeline
• Application Deadline: October 13, 2024
• Artist Interviews: September 16 - October 18, 2024
*Interviews will be conducted on a rolling basis throughout the submission process
• Projects Awarded: October 24, 2024
• Mural Installation/Fabrication: October 28 - December 20, 2024

1. Statement of Interest
A statement, outlining your interest in this project and your experience working on public art projects, or relevant art experience. You can submit this as:
• A written statement of 500 words or less
• Or a two minute or less audio or video clip.

2. Community Engagement
Briefly describe your community engagement experience.

3. Biography
A biography of no more than one page that includes information regarding your practice, experience, and education. If applying as a team, submit a single file containing separate biographies for each team member.

4. Three Professional References
Contact information for three references should be submitted, including name, title and affiliation, phone number, and email address. References should be able to speak to your ability to provide services for a public art project or artwork of a similar scope.

5. Previous Work – Digital Images
Six digital images of recent previous work (created within the past ten years). Each image should include: image number, artist's name, title, year, media, location, project budget, dimensions, commissioning agency, and collaborators or design professionals (if applicable).

If you are newer to public art and have so far created smaller projects, we would still love to have you apply. Professional support for artists with little or no mural experience may be provided.

Submission and Deadline
All materials must be received no later than October 13, 2024, at 11:59 pm. Incomplete or late submittals will not be considered.
